Student Speakers

Brown Primary Pledgers

  • Audrey Vasquez, Kyle Zoch, Ava Bryant, Colbi Davis, Avery Hayden, Oleg Gonzalez, Madeline Moore, Reagan Scallorn, Jace Taylor, and Caydence Hayden.

Superintendent’s Report

District News:

  • TIGER Award Recipients: Marlene Davis, Deborah Rose, Charles Duncan, Travis Kearns, Kristi Sandoval
  • Met with MD Anderson Science Park - building relationship of collaboration
  • Articles will begin appearing in Smithville Times & Elgin Courier featuring SISD
  • Superintendent’s Student Advisory Group - 1st meeting
  • ACE - finished last Friday, Dec. 14 with a Tamalada - Spring opens Monday, Jan. 14th
  • Education Foundation presented 3 grants (JH & 2 HS)

 Brown Primary School

  • 1st Grade program this Wednesday
  • Santa will be visiting BP Thursday (Lions Club program)

Smithville Elementary

  • Elfis and the Sleighriders 3rd grade program (last week)

 Smithville Junior High

  • Peace Poster Winner ‘flipped’ the switch on the Gazebo - an annual tradition of 4 years
  • 2 NewLine Interactive boards delivered and training took place last week
  • Destination Imagination teams participated in a workshop this past weekend. The trainer studied at Pepperdine University, has a Master’s degree in Theater from New York University and currently teaches theater at University of Cape Town in South Africa and is the director of Nigeria’s Premier Inclusive Theater.

Smithville High School

  • 1st Team All District-FB: 16 total
  • 1st Team All District-VB: 6 total (Plus 6 earning Academic All-District)
  • Band All Region Auditions 27 students Symphonic Band, 10 Concert Band, 15 Alternates
  • TigerTron Robotics - campus tours this week
After School Program
  • Wrapped up fall semester
  • Completed three service projects
  • Walk path at SES
  • Cookie jars for staff
  • Grocery bag drive for Smithville Food Pantry
  • Read about 50 books across the grade level
  • Partnered with Boys and Girls Club and Sylvan Learning to provide math tutoring to eight (8) second graders and eight (8) third graders
  • Partnered with Mrs. Sanchez’s adult ESL class from Brown Primary to give students the opportunity to make tamales

 Coming Up Across the District:

  • May 19th Central Office Holiday Luncheon (10:30a-1:30p)
  • January 17th Stadium Ribbon Cutting (12-1p) & Open House (4-6p)

 Informational Items

 Review Construction Manager At-Risk Selection Process - Mrs. McCarthy spoke to the process of rating the bids and determining the ‘winner’.


Action Items

  • Review and Approve 2017-2018 District Financial Audit - to be completed during Special Board Meeting on Wednesday, December 19, 2018
  • Consider Approval of Change Order for Security at New Facilities - additional cameras and access control points to Athletic Facility & JH (funds will be used from contingency)
  • Consider Name of New Multi-Purpose Athletic Complex - official name of stadium: Tiger Stadium
