Education for Children with Disabilities

Do you suspect that a child you know has a disability that will affect his or her learning? Pursuant to the individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the American with Disabilities Act, the Smithville Independent School District has a duty to locate, identify, evaluate, and, if eligible, provide a free, appropriate public education to children with disabilities who reside in its jurisdiction. This includes children with disabilities who are attending SISD, private schools, home schools, and children with disabilities who are homeless or residing in foster homes or other residential facilities. Referrals may be made by parents, state and local agency professionals, teachers, doctors, social workers, community members, and students themselves. If a child, age 3 through 21, is having difficulty in school, and you think he/she may have a disability, contact the Special Education Office at 512-237-2487.
